Ready for Spring

Dwarf Orinoco and I had a little talk this morning and we both agreed that we are ready for spring. Unfortunately, I think the worst weather is yet to come.

The following thread was started by Mike on December 27, 2002 at 8:26 pm PST

Green thumb

Luckily, as small as my greenhouse is I have a chance to play green thumb even in the winter.
Here`s my prototype hydro system with plants in it.

Mike's DO

Mike, Your DO looks good... even though its a bit shredded. ( Winter shred is normal even in my back yard )
Looks like it has a pretty good chance of early summer fruit... even if mr frosty zaps the leaves.

My yard -Almost January

It's been mild so far.
As you can see, my babaco and bananas are still carrying fruit. My Cherimoya hasn't even been touched by frost. The only thing in my garden yhat has appeared to croak is a 5 gal Prichardia Pacifica.

Now if Jan. would mirror Dec. I will be one happy dude.

Orinoco

That Dwarf Orinoco is a pup I got from Bill. The one I bought off of you is just as big, if not a tad taller. And, much less affected by the weather where I have it planted. Even though it`s on the North side of the house it seems to ba a happy camper. I`m hoping to have 2 Dwarf Orinoco`s set Fruit this spring. Then I`ll be one happy camper!! lol

Orinoco

Jeff, here`s the orinoco I bought from you. This should give you an indication of the winds we get over here. This plant is in our entry way. A wall on both sides of the walkway. Pic is taken basically looking north. Winds come right up in there and try to open the front door. Lifting the Orinoco`s leaves upward in the process.

Looks good

Mike, It looks as good as mine, in my wind protected area.

Jeff

Petiole spacing

Jeff, you notice how much farther the Petioles are from each other on the one I got from you? I have that plant where it barely gets any direct sunlight. I don`t know why, but for me that seems to be the best exposure. The ones in direct sun seem to get faded and almost sunburned. It will be interesting to see how that plant matures and ripens fruit compared to the one in full sun. I also have a Dwarf Cavendish right in next to the orinoco. I wish I could get fruit from one of those here with the pics I see of bunch sizes they`ll put out.

Heres my Rajapuri, best of the lot.

As I was saying the Rajapuri has faired the best, this winter, and the Williams hybrid the worst, but figured the Williams might have problems, but was hoping. Finally got out and took pics of the winter damage, as of late.

This new 2.1 megs camera shows too much detail, it shows my messy winter yard, with pruned brush from cut down trees and leaves and young Queen Palms in pots scattered about, so the falling trees would not hit them. Boy do I have my work cut out for me this season, besides fininsh my old falling down redwood fence, and put in a decent watering system.

Mona Lisa & Misi Liki pics

Behind them is a old peach tree, I cut down, and soon it will be shredded into mulch for the bananana trees, as well as other brush about the yard. To the left is the 2 Moi papayas, I finally decided to cover, after getting some cold dew damage to the lower stems, which traveled to the more tender upper trunk. Covered the night before, it got down to 32.5F. I waited this long, to see how they were affected by cold.

Here is the poor, Williams hybrid

The Williams hybrid looked like it was going to be ok here, this winter, at least. But the center new leaf turned black and mushy, with temps only down to 36F, when the open leaves didn't look any worse, then the hardier bananas. But with time and more recently a temp down to 32.5F, well you see the results.

URL is wrong

David, Check the URL on your website.

Jeff

The above followup was added by Jeff on December 28, 2002 at 10:47 pm PST.

URL

Yes, URL looks all screwed up.

Should read something similar to "www.msnusers.com/david48/williamshybriddec202002.jpg"
Or something similar to that.

URL

It looks to me like you are enrering too much junk. Go into msn as someone else would to view your pic. Open pic and pull assress from there. I think it`s giving you all that crap on the upload side or something.
Mike

This Strange and frustrating, it was ok

I was having problems before, and loading the pic off my website, then copying the address, seemed to solve the problem before, this ?David.

The above followup was added by David, Waterford CA, zone9 on December 30, 2002 at 0:28 am PST.

Mike and Ben, I have web space, but

I have web space, but what about a group, like yours.

I find my index, and have webspace, but I don't see how to make it like yours, do I need to sign up.

One strange thing took when I click on my name, in the index, it takes me to another guys group site, that it says, is not part of the normal listings, and there is nudes and such there, why is this so? Has my name or site been attached by some devious son of >>>>

lol

David, you just never know what some asshole will do to you on the computer.
What is the address to where your pics are at? I`ll take a look and see what I think is your troubles.
Mike

Now I see

David,
MSN changes your file extentions. They are no longer JPG's

Jeff

The above followup was added by Jeff on December 30, 2002 at 4:52 am PST.

Mike, here is my webspace site link

http://groups.msn.com/davidlj48@hotmail.com

Mike, I deleted the pics from my webspace, and opened up a regular community group site, but it looks like the pic addresses have the same long extended address. I never even realized my hotmail account gave me 30 MB of community space, or I guess one has 30 MB, to use how they want.

Not sure why it is, if you tap on my underlined name, it links to somebodies elses group community site, at profileagroups.msn.com, my webspace link is at the top.

David

The above followup was added by David, Waterford CA, zone9 on December 30, 2002 at 9:33 pm PST.

David, David, David

David,
Your ISP should be providing you with some web storage space.
Use Front page, Publisher or even MS word to create a webpage, then upload it using Coffee cup free FTP.

When in doubt.... the easy way is to join Yahoo/Geocities. They give you a decent webstorage along with a very easy webpage creator/editor.

Jeff

The above followup was added by Jeff on December 31, 2002 at 0:47 am PST.

Jeff, my ISP ,10MB webspace, few pics

Have a few pics on my ISP web space , but went to the hotmail one, more space, 30MB. I was having similar problems there too, but we seemed to have solved it, with getting the correct address, by loading the pic, and using that address.

David

The above followup was added by David, Waterford CA, zone9 on December 31, 2002 at 4:23 am PST.

Jeff, you are right, no type listed????

should say JPEG or jpg...

David

The above followup was added by David, Waterford CA, zone9 on December 31, 2002 at 4:26 am PST.

Type

I don't know what type they are?

MSN seems to convert them to an unknown file type unpon uploading...
Though they are opened with XP if you assosiate them with picture viewer.

Jeff

The above followup was added by Jeff on December 31, 2002 at 5:35 am PST.

I don`t agree with any of that

This is one of my pics on my MSN website. Go ahead and view the source of this image.

Mike, this is from my community group

Mike

This is a pic of my Rajapuri, last week, after the last storm.

Lets try this again, this time when I hit properties, on this site, instead of my hotmail webspace, I see this one show TYPE. I also noticed that when you hit properties, the URL address here, is not the same, as the one in the Go slot, that is interesting, I was using the GO slot address, from my webspace site, maybe that was the problem.

Yes, I see that your MSN pic address is full of crap too, so maybe mine will work too, this time.

wow, batting ZERO, still no pic

This doesn't make any sense mike, if yours works, how how are you gettiing you pic URL?

Mike, send me you address and I'll send you a invite to my msn community site, so you can see pics and addesses.

David

The above followup was added by David, Waterford CA, zone9 on January 01, 2003 at 9:16 pm PST.

Mike, Yours is listed as .jpg

Davids pix have no file extention... I wonder if he FTP'd the photos or uploaded them using the photo uploader that they provide? It could be altaring the file type or something so it can't be opened from a website.

BTW your picture has the file extention of..

BabyCavinPerlite11-14.jpg

Jeff

So our browsers can open the redirected file

The above followup was added by Jeff on January 02, 2003 at 0:01 am PST.

OK David

You are putting in the address of the page with your pic, not the actual pic. Open the page with the pic you want, Right click on the pic and hit properties. Make sure you copy all of that crap - like 4 lines worth. Then you are in business.
Mike

The above followup was added by Mike on January 02, 2003 at 2:06 am PST.

Raji

Your Raji is looking about like my Orinoco. Should be fine though. I can`t wait to flower one of these damn things. lol
Mike

The above followup was added by Mike on January 02, 2003 at 2:08 am PST.

Mike, that is what I did, on last test

Mike

That is what I did on my last test, for the Raja, I brought up the pic, right clicked and then hit properties. I then lite up and copied the URL address, listed as the photos URL address.

Isn't that what you said, you just did????

David

The above followup was added by David, Waterford CA, zone9 on January 02, 2003 at 3:51 am PST.

here it goes again Mike

Here is the same Rajapuri, before winter changed it.

I think

I see what you are doing. Make sure as you copy it, you pull the mouse to the right and down. I think your missing part of the URL. It is LONG!!!! See, here`s your Dwarf Orinoco
Mike

Mikes got it!

I knew he'd get it!

Jeff

Mike, I see what yhou mean,

Mike

I see what you mean, I had never realized it was not all showing that window. Well here it is, my Rajapuri before winter.

David

The above followup was added by David, Waterford CA, zone9 on January 03, 2003 at 5:28 am PST.

Hurray Clap Clap Clap!!!

Now you have it!!
That`s strange, my Raja has done that same curl on the leaf coming out. It will be interesting for the two of us to see if all this talk of Raja choking is true or not. I sure hope not. It is such a vigorous plant. I was counting and it looks like I have a total of 6 plants that should be at flowering size this spring.
Yes, Finally. I hope the wait pays off. If not, Oh well it`s been fun.
Mike

The above followup was added by Mike on January 04, 2003 at 6:51 am PST.

Mike, other leafs didn't curl like that

Mike

I don't remember my other Raja leaves curling like that, seems like that was the next to last one to come out, before it cooled and stopped growing, or even the last one, still sittiing there to finish, which is now shedded a little.
