A step into the 21st century

The regulars to this board come from several different countries. It was just last month we were commenting how are different regions seem to have different accents. I thought, it would be cool to here the voices of those who I commincate with on a regular basis.

We'll....A fairly new Free communications tool is available online just might be what I was looking for.

Its called Skype and it allows anyone with a a pc, speakers and a microphone to phone anywhere in the world.
Best of all... Its free of long distance service charges!
It works much like an instant messenger and you don't need broadband work it to work well.
( Min requirements 33k modem)

( Now we can whine about the cold or plant pests in real time!!)

Anyone want to give it a try, follow the link below to download the software.

almost

Hi Jeff,

this sounds really good. I had a look, but unfortunately,... I'm running windows 98 and connection speed is often below 33k. I'm going to have to stick with the phone until the connection speed improves out here. Fibre-optic cable is halway here, theres a 20km stretch left to be installed.

It works great

Ben,
The I bet that as long as your connection speed is close to the 33k you'd be fine.
The lack of XP will be a problem i think.

It cant get over how well it works.

I just got though testing the program wirh someone in a different city... The sound is perfect! Clear...better than my phone!
No pops, cracks, feedback or echos at all.
I even tried it on my slow old laptop... still sounds perfect.

Somethings gotta give.... You never get something for nothing!

doesn´t work on windows98

What a shame. I was looking forward to hearing you and Ben as well. I have MSN and a headphone but have not yet found someone else who has a headphone. It certainly would be a lot cheaper than calling.

Jason, I have hotmail, and a mic

Seems like Jeff and I have tried it on MSN, IM and it doesn't work or something happened.

Some of us have MSN and or hotmail.

This Skype Internet phone is different

Skype is much better than any IM.

Once the hardware/software is developed I bet it will do away with regular phone service.

I have used it several times as a speaker phone... It runs in the background and rings just like a telephone. The sound is crystal clear.
