Catalina Ironwood in Hayward..
Some things looks biiger in photos ands somethings smaller-this tree seems taller in real life.I thought the ones at Hayward state were big-this guy is much taller and multitrunked has it all over the others in girth.

I would think with the showy leaves this would make a great outdoor container plant. Araliad like. And could take the coldest weather we get anyplace in NorCal.

Despite being indigenous to So Cal, these trees are remarkably hardy. The one in this picture has probably been there since they opened up the University Center (formerly the Army's Pomeroy Center), which was originally built in 1952, so it's seen a good deal of freezes. The tree is huge, as far as Ironwood goes.

Here's it's trunk with my hand for scale. From thumb to pinkie is an 8 inch width.

Further back showing more of the trunk. The leaf litter was very thick, as the tree gets little attention being out of the way. I would hate for them to cut it down if they do any rennovation of the site.
