frozen Durian

I ended up with a previously frozen Durian from 99 Ranch. I ate a little at home, suffered onion burps all night, then took the remainder to work with me. My co-workers were horrified except for a Chineese man who was born in Vietnam then made it to the States as an eight year old. He had eaten Durian and was curious to try it again.
He did not like it!
Well, I keep waiting for the "I gotta have more" to take over but it has not. This is my second try and they say the third is the charm but.......
The triple bagged Durian sat in a chill warehouse. The wonderful fruity part of the smell pervaded the huge room and the rotten landfill smell did not present itself until you got close. Opening the bag let out the rotten landfill smell and only a couple of my friends were willing to try it.

Durian smell?

Are you sure it smells like rotten landfill? (Just kidding, of course). Yep, I got the same response from my family, so I had to stay outside in the cold patio, tried to eat ALL in one sitting. They wouldn't allow me to keep it frozen in anywhere :). I really laugh aloud reading this, George. Thanks for sharing "your suffering".

You've got to find a fresh one.

A durian isn't a durian after it's been frozen. Fresh is divine yet slightly repulsive. The texture is pure sensuality on a fresh one.

What I'd like to try is a Papuan red durian. I hear that they are insanely good.

The smell is part of the charm

but it sure makes Durian a lot harder to accept than other tropical goodies such as Jackfruit and Mangosteen. I have seen fresh durians at local Chinese supermarkets such as Ranch 99. They are quite expensive (something like $5.99 per pound), but it is better to splurge on a big one since smaller ones can be unripe. IMO, the frozen ones have the taste and creamy texture but miss the firmness of fresh Durians.
