Cooler today. I had a high of 28.8c (84f). It was still very pleasant for a walk on the beach. The tourists love their cars and do not venture very far from the car park. So, you can still get a large stretch of beach to yourself.

It is forecast to be much cooler and foggy tomorrow - Bach to building garden walls and setting fence posts.

I expected a bit cooler today and it was overall but still max'd out at 95.4°F (35.2°C). It was of shorter duration today but still holding at 82°F at 22:20 (10:20 pm)
Good luck to you folks over 100°F.

Cheers, Barrie.

i haven't watered it once this year and it seems to not care at all. it is putting on a lot of new growth, maybe a foot? looking good. the first year it had a bit leaf spot, but this year its minimal or none.

Oh, it didn't self pollinate so well, but if i ditch a rosemary i have room nearby for a pollinator.

Hi George,

As for watering, I usually only water my newly planted #2 and #5 trees for a year, and then they are on their own! In our climate, with a reasonable soil, I suspect a lot of people baby them too much; or more than they need to. So you are doing the right thing!

As far as the leaf spot, to me it is a sign of over-crowding and not enough "room to breath". Typically, they are crowded at the nursery particularly in winter/spring (even down in CA they are kept in greenhouses during the winter), and so most show sighs of peacock spot the year they come out of the nursery. But then, with reasonable air circulation, I generally never see it after the first year on field planted olive trees.

As far as the pollination, a second tree would be a good idea. We now ship AB46 size trees if you don't like the drive out to wine country (see http://www.oregonolivetrees.com/) Or, since Kalamata are grafted onto Leccino or Frantoio, you could try letting a sucker grow from the rootstock to form a "pollinator branch" and see if that works.

Beware on crowding them into too small of a place. There is no such thing as a dwarf fruiting olive tree, all want to be about 15 feet tall in our climate even with pruning - at least that is what I think!

Picture is of a AB46 size nursery tree, next to a row of five Leccino planted here only six years ago from the same size nursery pot. Olive can grow in our climate!

its pretty crazy how fast olive trees grow when they want to.

just measured, its about 12 feet between my kalamata and the rosemary, so seems like decent enough room.

i'll wait till spring and buy another huge one. always happy to make that drive out in the valley.

No Olives here (sorry) :o
... Much cooler today at 81.3°F / 27.4°C with some occasional cloud rolling thru. Heard some thunder in the late afternoon. Must've been some rain showers in the region ... You?

Cheers, Barrie.

We reached 93 degrees last Saturday, 92 Sunday. Also, we drove out to Forks on Saturday and it was 95 there! Hopefully that fried a few vampires brains. It sure was a great day to enjoy the ocean beaches which are almost always cool and frequently cloudy.

Been consistant in the low to mid 80°F's the past while. Temps are expected to kick up a notch for the weekend closer to 90°F. Still pretty comfortable though.

Cheers, Barrie.

Look for this flag Ian, when you're up our way. The BC provincial flag I fly from my deck.
