Is anyone growing this yucca and/or know anything about it in terms of hardiness and which species it actually is? It doesn't really look like Y. aloifolia and some people suggest it has some desmetiana in it, which I think it looks a lot like. I haven't seen it at any nursuries around here.

Linda I think its Y.desmentiana and apparently hardy to -6c though I did not test mine last year.
However David Matzdorf has one on his roof which came through last winter link HERE

Linda, Loree from Danger Garden has a few of them I believe in her Portland garden that have done well from the pictures I have seen. I bought a small one last year but it was put out in a pot late into fall and got water logged then rotted. Southlands Nursery had them early in the season and I'm fairly certain Phoenix Perennials has them (or at least had them). From what I can tell it should be fine with good drainage.

Kev, thanks for the link/info. I read GOTE, but somehow missed that. I noticed too that Luzula nivea is growing all over the place in David's wonderful rooftop garden and I wondered what it looked like mass planted.

So it can take -6 C (at least for one night). It doesn't even look like aloifolia, so I don't understand why anyone would call it that in the first place. It is identified as Y. aloifolia 'Purpurea" in the Mary and Gary Irish book too.

Thanks, Lou. I wonder if it survived 2008 in Lori's garden. Phoenix didn't have it last time I checked, but maybe that has changed or they will bring them in again. Too bad about your plant.

No problem, if I'm out by Phoenix I'll take a look for you. I think they were fairly reasonably priced albeit on the small side.

Thanks, Lou. That would be great if you get a chance to look.

Hello Linda,
Yucca aloifolia ‘Purpurea’ is hardy to Z5 and colour is best in summer. It's produced in my area by Briggs Nursery. Only grow 2' high by 3' wide. I do not have one. :(

Hi Roger,

You need to get one! It would fit right in with the other plants you have in your garden.

I starting seeing them here at the local nursery last year...this may be my first ever Yucca in the garden. ( I'm running out of full sun in the garden.)
Also I think I got the height and width wrong above...
3' tall by 2' wide is correct. The ones I've seen in person are really nice looking.
And actually look like across of yucca-aloe, very cool plant.
