Tetrapanax

Here is a pic of my Tetrapanax papyrifer "rex".
This has a 16 inch high stem and the leaves are now 36 inch across instant exotic appeal and next year------------- who knows.

Another pic

Are these wonderful plants grown over the pond from the UK??

Kev...

I will try and take some pics of my largest Tetrapanax p. "Steroidal Giant" (which may be rex). The leaves are 5ft. across with a 4inch. thick trunk that is about 4 or 5 ft. tall.
All I have right now is one of those pocket size digital cameras. Give me some tome to try and get some decent pics.

Tetrapanax "Steriodal Giant"

Looks to be one in the same sold locally as Tetrapanax "Steriodal Giant".
Mine is 3 yrs old and took a year to take off but now has a 6' stem and the same deeply cut leaves unlike the typical Tetrapanax sold prior to this one being available.
Instant tropics! 2nd year freeze took the leaves but no damage to the stem at all....with quick recovery in the spring.

'Rex' vs. 'Steroidal Giant'

I seem to remember Sean Hogan insisting that there was a difference between these two plants, but I don't remember the details about that. In any case I would rather grow 'rex' because it does not have such a stupid name.

Kev...

I still prefer to use film. I am a Photography major that still enjoys the darkroom work although, I have not had time in a long while to do so.
I do plan on purchasing a good digital within the next year. Nikon has come a long way with their digital line and I hope next years new models are even better.

Digital cameras

I use a 7MP 5x zoom Pentax Optio 750z digital camera and it seems to do a good job for me and the zoom is really useful for the faraway palm pics.

When we went to Tenerife last year I took a shot out of the plane window at 42,000 feet, of an island, after getting back and zooming in on the P.C software I could make out deckchairs on the beach they were obviously not that clear but I am sure you get the idea.

A high optical zoom is a good idea and nowadays I am sure the zooms are a lot higher.

Hope this helps with any choice.

Where can I get one of these

I had first seen this plant about four years ago.

On Bainbridge Island and then again on television on a shoe depicting Linda Cochren's garden, also on Bainbridge.

Since then I'd forgotten about it.

I live in Seattle, where can I buy one of these or trade for one or buy seed. I consider this plant a 'must have' in any tropicalesque garden.

Thanks Jay

Thanks, Jay. I've purchased a number of plants from both nurseries in the past and have been a very happy camper.

I'm really looking forward to having this plant. They really are stunning.

I was able to receive your email but still can't send to you. I think you have to add me to your spam blocker 'white list' in order to receive email from me.

Thanks for your rapid response,

Terry

Tetrapanax

I have found a seller of this beast in the UK. There is a fabulous specimen on the Isle of Wight in Hampshire, UK. It is about 25' tall, and has heaps of stems. This is where i first saw it, and now have to have it to plant by the pool along with the bananas and palms.
