Glanford

Glanford low temps reported by the personal weather stations were inconsistent with other Victoria areas during the coldspell in January 2004. The low that station reported was 7°C lower than my lowest temp in Sidney.

Glanford is located by on the map at the number 6.

question for Alain

Hi Alain.
The temperature at my house varies quite a bit from the inland stations in Bremerton, give or take a couple of degrees. I wanted to know if these Vantage Pro Weather Stations keep the days highs and lows and other data automatically to look up later, or do have to document the readings dayly? I would love to buy one of these devices, but at about $600.00 I would be dissapointed to find it didn't keep the data for the year, for a quick and easy look. I am gone most of the winter so this would be of paramount importance, if this tool would be worth anything to me at all. Thanks,

-Brian

vantage pro

I have vantage pro at my house in newport hills, which includes software to store all this data on P.C.. My data is uploaded to NWS and weatherunderground, so I can see current and past weather obs at my house from anywhere in the world. I highly recommend davis vantage pro 2 with fan aspirated thermometer. This is not cheap, but the biggest cost is the high speed internet to upload the data, not the weather station. Look at my data at http://www.weatherunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KWABELLE4 to see what you can do. I personally recommend not putting the thermometer on the roof, as this is not a very accurate reflection of temperature (hot air off roof in summer days; at nite, air closer to the surface is considerably cooler than the air at the top of a roof, with radiation off the roof also helping to artifactually warm the temps). I have my anemometer on a 10 foot pipe attached to my chimney for maximum exposure (world meteorology standards call for anemometer at 10 meters AGL). I have fan aspirated thermometer attached to outbuilding (shed) pretty close to 2 meters (which i believe is the standard). One should stick to these guidelines as much as possible. With vantage pro these are solar powered and wireless.

separate temp and precip sensor

fan aspirated unit attached to shed
separating thermometer from anemometer requires simple purchase of additional transmitter. sorry for the large size of the photos

Temps differ

I wonder where the 28F as a low in Eureka was taken? NOAA has a low in Eureka as 31F. This reading of 31F as the lowest temp is the same low I recorded on my digital gauge. I can't imagine that it had gotten down to 28F on woodly island in the middle of the bay where the NOAA weather station is. matt

Peter B - Weather Underground

Peter:
After reading ypour message above, I setup a station with Wunderground. My link is attached below. I have had my Vantage Pro for two years, but I just got high speed internet in the last week. So, I was not able to take advantage of these sites up until now. I work away from home. It will be great to check up on local conditions during the week.

To Matt

I was down in Eureka on a tugboat, and it sure was 28F right on the water at the wood mill south of the Old Downtown Eureka. All the docks were covered with frost, and I was close to falling down a couple of times. I called Ian Barclay how cold it was, but I don't think he was too suprised. I saw damaged Canna's from frost in more than on yard. The strange thing is that Corral trees were in full bloom, with no sign on damage, even on the flowers.

a compairison of annual averages?

Hey I would love to see your local averages per year.
It would be interesting to see if there is an difference in compairing different locations.

tug the rain away

Brian, I hope you had your warm socks on. It's very possible that the 28F you experienced on the tug boat was for real. Microclimates are always intereseting to compare even w/in specific climate zones. matt

Matt

Hi Matt.
The other thing that was different is they said it was the first night in quite some time that the bar coming into the bay was calm. The nights had been very clear according to the people I talked to, and the cold was radiation frost plain and simple. Even though there was frost at the docks starting at about 9pm, it did little to no damage to anything I looked at, except some Cannas. The following day I had to go shopping, and it was beautiful weather. That is why you are in an exceptional place to garden. Frost in short duration, and a complete warmup the next day. If we had the daily warmups, even during some of our most extreme winters, that alone would make one heck of a difference on what could survive here. Looks like they are doing some nice things with the old downtown. Hope next time I am there I will have time to hit one of the restaraunts there. Take care.

Those stats are?

I'm assuming they are from actual observations, not historical statistics?

You definitely had a warm year, assuming all the average-temperature stats are accurate for 2005.

The above followup was added by Eric, Eugene on January 02, 2006 at 2:45 pm PST.

Interesting !Yearly average is above 50F

I must be adding wrong but I come up with an average of 14.8c or 58.6F so WAY above the so called 10c or 50F normal for around here. Interesting that someone else has got a temp above 10c mark other than me !

My extreme low in January was 23.9F -4.5c
My extreme high in January was 64.3F ~18c

My average temperature for 2005 is 58.6F

Saturna stats

Hi Eric. The Saturna statistics were recorded in 2005 at the official Environment Canada weather station on the island. They should be very accurate. You can see data on-line at: http://www.climat.meteo.ec.gc.ca/climateData/dailydata_e.html?timeframe=2&Prov=XX&StationID=96&Year=2005&Month=1&Day=1

Temps.

The highest temp. I recorded for 2005 was 30 C. on Aug. 4 and the coldest minimum temp. was on Jan.15 when the mercury bottomed out at -4.5 C. Precip. for the year was 37" inches.

The above followup was added by Joe, SSI on January 03, 2006 at 9:53 am PST.

What was your average temp Joe?

Curious as to what 2005's average temp was in your area?

The above followup was added by CJW on January 03, 2006 at 4:11 pm PST.

Averages

Really I have never been bothered to figure out my averages. I'm more concerned about how cold it got. I don't even really care how warm it ever gets, but I do record it anyway. When I have time I'll figure out the averages for you. Cheers, Joe

The above followup was added by Joe, SSI on January 04, 2006 at 8:11 am PST.

Celsius and inches?!

Can someone teach me what Demimetric is, exactly?

I have the ATLAS OF OREGON which lists fairly low averages for the 1950-1980 period. Since then warmer temps have driven the average up.

I think Eugene got to 98F for a high and 20F for a low.

The above followup was added by Eric, Eugene on January 04, 2006 at 2:44 pm PST.

Averages

I am curious to see the changes in the yearly averages as this
is a good of change in climate.
I don't know about you but I am seeing an overall slow warming trend since I began recording weather data in 1998.
