Nice pics. I love the west end of Vancouver, Canada's Riviera!

I am figuring that the butia capitata pictured is a new one? There were two down there a few years ago but they died, I thought. To my knowledge the Jubaea has been there, rock solid... Hats off to the Palm Society and Vancouver Parks.

Marc, did you get the pics. of the Butias I sent you from here on SSI. There are two fair size established ones on our island, never protected. One flowered and fruited.

no that is by no means a new planting... that butia has been there for a few years now.... i have pics of it along the way. they mummy wrap them in the winter... its quite a monstrosity actually during the winter months the protection they use... the top of the fronds on that butia is well over 6 feet

Joe: I did get those photos of SSI butias. Very nice! And, hearing of the success of the butia downtown (almost) makes me want to spend the $150 and grab one from Sunnyside. (They are a really nice size).

LOVE IT! yeah its def. not for the faint of heart. I really don't understand the butia mystery all that much. I would like to see if the seattle butia's or SSI butia's seed and then we can start growing palms from matured specimens in our regions. I still think there is hope, it seems many people have had years of success and then one winter knocks em back... if you were willing to go to extra measures this palm could be a great addition to any garden i think.

One of the large Butias here seeded, but someone I know collected all the of the seed. I just sowed a bunch of Butia seed two days ago. Grown many from seed over the years.

Awesome! Can't wait to hear how they work out. There must def. be certain butia's in the region hardier than others!
