Are your bananas still with us?

Does everyone still have theirs? Did any get toasted out there?

Mine got nipped but still in decent shape, along with my fantastic nonblooming gingers and my cannas.

Not yet

All of my most tender plants look awesome. No frost here yet, my Brugs. are still in full bloom. Cheers, Joe

Yes

Bananas took a hit in early October with the couple of days of 32º F mornings, but the growing tips stayed alive and opened up with healthy leaves showing now. I expect that to end any day now with the night time temperatures getting colder and colder. I have a hardy ginger that blooms in November. I haven't seen a bloom on them for so long I forgot what they look like. The flower buds are really big now and I hope there is enough heat for them to open before the first frost does them in.

Early planting and canopy

The ones I planted early in april that had just a bit of canopy had very little damage at all from the frost in october.

The rest of the nanners have been trimmed of most of their leaves and are going under some plastic covered cylinders for the winter this week. These were planted late with tender greenhouse growth.

Halloween to saint patrick's day is about the duration of wrapping or cover, I imagine. I don't feel I will bother with any addtional heating unless there is very extreme weather for any long duration of days.

Bracing for the rainiest month of the year and getting ready to kiss any temperatures in the teens Celcius goodbye until march.

Bananas in Seattle

Took this picture today to show off the brick walkway I just finished in my backyard. Five years of staring at the pile of bricks to get motivated and just a couple weekends to install. Now I just have to get rid of the mountain of dirt from the excavation!

Anyway, the photo shows my banana still looking good here in Seattle. I did move a pup from it to another garden in Roy Washington this summer and it had the leaves burnt off by an early frost in September, then started trying to push out a new leaf in October. Poor little thing doesn't know what to think...

80% gone

mine took a beating in those mid October frosts. Still growing and newest leaves look fine, but overall they look pretty sad.

I have one blooming right now and the flower is so far unscathed, so I hope the frosts hold off for a bit longer....

pretty good

my bananas are doing pretty good. They definitely got burned by the early frost and the winds the last couple weeks have shred them a bit but they are still mainly green with some ratty tips. All have been pushing out new leaves that look perfect so I can't really complain.

Don't have any in the ground but...

..the potted bananas, which I still have outside, are fine. The lowest temp I have recorded so far was 3.3 C (38 F).

Wiped out in September...

But it wasn't the frost that got them. The deer have acquired a taste for the bananas and continue to eat every little bit of leaf that appears on them.

Gingers

No sign of even a tiny flower bud on mine. I've come to the conclusion I just dont have the right ones for the PNW. Slight bummer considering I purchased one of two styles from Jungle Fever in T-town.

So, bananas, when do we bubble wrap the trunks, after the first major frost?
