Echiums

These 2 Echiums were tiny 3" seedlings from a buddies garden that I transplanted this spring. So much for my thought back then of throwing an upside down tub over them during freezing weather this winter! I guess I'll have to be a little more creative and construct some kind of temporary structure around them that I can wrap up in a hurry if need be.

Protection

I've got a few similar looking plants out there as well, Chris. They are normally pretty much of a long shot in my area, but they decided to self-sow, so we'll see.

I've gotten them thru quite a few degrees of frost before with a whack of polyester row cover ("remay") thrown over during the frosty spells, easily pulled away during the mid-day thaws. Won't help if it gets below about -6C, but with hope from this rumored El Nino, maybe it's the winter to succeed with echiums.
