An interesting Euc in Nanaimo

Barrie just sent me a few pics of a hybrid Euc raised by Joe on Saltspring and planted (and maintained) by Barrie at the Nanaimo ferry terminal. Joe figures it is a hybrid between his E. gunnii and E. dalrympleana although when I first saw that I thought it had E. parvula in it. Thanks for sharing your pics with us Barrie.

Barrie said: “The first five pics are from the tallest, likely 10' or slightly more….. The next 4 pics are another of the same "Joe's hybrid" species. A sizeable piece broke under heavy wet snow last winter but has since recovered nicely. It's no more than 25' from the high tide right at sea level. The last pic is a beach shot taken from where the previous pic was taken.”

Here it is, a total of ten pics:

Parvula hybrid?

I do have Parvula mixed in with my other eucs. so it may possibly be a parvula x dalrympleana. I know I did not collect the seed from any of my Parvula. Looks like those trees are doing great. The specimen at Grace Point is also doing very nice.

That's interesting, because it really looks just like E. parvula to me, except for the flower buds. The flower buds scream hybrid with E. dalrympleana or some other three budded species. E. parvula always has flower buds in 7's and they are a bit "pointier" if you will. Other than that the tree could pass for E. parvula.

Joe!

What's your e-mail these days? I have a palm nut in California who might like to contact you, if it's ok with you.
