Question about winter in southern UK
We talk about how mild the zones are in southern England and Wales, but this is reference mainly to temperatures during cold spells. What about the opposite scenario? Let's use only the deep part of winter for reference - say, between Dec. 1 and Feb. 15.
During this period, what's the warmest temperatures that can be expected in the south if there is a rainy and mild flow from the southwest? And what about winter ridges? If high pressure builds in and it dries out, what are temps like in the southern third of the country, and how much of a problem is surface fog?

I live in Near Manchester, England , which is Geographically, classified as North West England but meteorologically in the CET(a triangulated area of central England boundaried between Bristol, Lancashire and London).
However, the highest temperatures, one can expect here are about 15C. possibly 16, or maybe 17C at best in the South of England.
Fog is only a problem in low lying valleys.
Where I live is only about 65Metres above sea level and I regularly escape mist and fogs lying just 20 metres below.
I do get some benefit from the westerly airflow across the atlantic, which is of course intensified across the South West.
Average temps for say extreme south west England and the Scilly Isles in Dec to Feb are around +11C ( I get similar to London at around 7-8C for those same months.

That was very interesting. I see Belgium and Vancouver are very close in the temp. department. Now those temps. in Vancouver are most likely taken at the airport. Take the temps. from Coal Harbour or English Bay and the winter mins. are much milder.

The winter averages for Scilly and Guernsey are a bit surprising, with the high and low only 1 or 2 degrees apart! I would have expected the mildness to manifest as slightly warmer days, but I guess not...
