Loquat Varieties for Seattle Area
I was wondering if anyone had experience getting loquats to fruit in the Puget Sound area? We've had some seedlings for many years, but they never seem to fruit. I know better than to expect it every year, but I'd like to find out if there are selected varieties that have a better chance here.
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Dave

My loquat has been in my yard for seven years now. It flowers every year around this time and is currently doing so. It has fruited twice; once in 2006 and again in 2008. 2006 I had around a dozen fruit that ripened in June (very tasty I might add). This year the tree has had the most flowers I have ever seen on it and I am expecting it to fruit. The tree is approximately 12 feet in height withy a 6 inch diameter trunk. It was planted as a small 1 gallon little sapling. It had never once been damaged.

Steve,
Do you remember the variety of your loquat?

Loquats available locally here are mostly seedlings, so variety does not come into it.
How are everyone's loquats doing? Especially those that had small unprotected trees seeing single digits? Bronzing? Spotting?
I want to put one in a prominent location this year and am worried that it will look like hell through bad winters like this one.

Does anyone know the procedure for grafting loquats in this climate? Are they done in the spring or summer budded?
Steve, would you be willing to let me nip some scion wood sometime? Where are you located?
Thanks for your response!

Mine is about 5 ft tall. Bronzed out pretty good. Low temp was 11f (but could have been lower). New growth fried.

Steve,
Drop me an email (my name is a link) so we can figure out a good time to grab scions. I appreciate it!
Cheers!

I have two that I planted in the mid nineties, they are blooming like crazy this year. Some years the flowers have gotten frost damage, and I have yet to get any fruit. The trees are probably 18' or so.
