Mediterrean Plants in south-west Germany

Dear Members,

I would like to introduce myself briefly. I am by occupation landscape designer (in the town planning and environmental protection authority) and for years a fan of mediterrean plants and Italy. I have also a homepage with many topics (plants, wine, weather, olive oil, Italy) under http://www.markus-abel.de/ (german version) and http://www.markus-abel.de/opening.htm (english version). In my Garden grows vine, palms (Trachycarpus, Sabal, Rhapidophyllum), Eucalyptus, Bananas, Olives, Cypresses, Italian pines, Yucca, Opuntia, Agave etc. (see my homepage). Your are all invited to visit my Homepage and Guestbook.

I live in the Rhine-Region (Baden) and in the southern Palatinate (Landau) actively. Also I know the neighbouring France Region “northern Alscace” (Strasbourg, Wissembourg, Haguenau) well. My region is the hottest and winter-mildest place of Germany and it belongs to the USDA Zone 8a.

Otherwise I measured the deepest values at the night of Sunday on Monday for 20 years in my garden (minus 15.6 degrees Celsius). An inspection route evenly in my garden, did not show frost damages with (also the olives), what is due probably to the " shortness " this cool air break-down.

Otherwise you are also gladly invited in my bilingual (German/English) Yahoo group mediterrean_plants • Mediterrane garden plants " also to discuss ".

Gruesz

Marcus, I will be sending some seeds to Germany which I suspect may be hardy in some parts of Germany. Not Mediterranean, but with tropical affinities.

I am curious about the climactic anomaly around the Bodensee: is it any milder than where you are? Or not as much? I know that around some of the Alpine lakes between southern Switzerland and northern Italy, Trachycarpus palms are common and so are seemingly rather tender plants like Bougainvillea.

Mild Regions in Germany

Helo Rob,

my Region (rhine-valley) ist rather mild than the Bodensee. But the north italian lakes like Lago Maggiore, Lago di Garda have a very special climate is called "insubric". The winter there are were mild; you can grow Nerium oleandrum, Brahea, Phönix canariensis and Jubaea there. But the summers are cooler (heavy rainfall area) than my region and norhren italy (Po-area) Milano and Verona etc.

I am interested to stay with you in contact. If you like this to write direct email to markusabel@web.de. Maybe I am interested in seeds too (I have fresh seeds from different mediterraneien plants.

Ciao Marcus

small world my wife is from Bad Berg

I recently returned from Bad bergzabern which is in the same area and seen quite a few Trachy's and a few Monkey Puzzle Trees. Your climate is somewhat similiar to here (vancouver) albeit drier and the summers are warmer. Took over a Kiwi for relatives which for some reason is rare in t hat part of the world. I am sure it will do well
