Eucalyptus delegatensis

I stumbled onto this at wondered if anyone here has any experience with this Eucalypt. It is reported to be hardy enough for the PNW.
Ian?

Cheers, Barrie.

E. delegatensis

I have had E. delegatensis since 2000, and so far, so good, but I have yet to see how it will do in a really cold winter. It needs good drainage though and doesn't like clay.

In the early 1970s, some plants of E. delegatensis were planted at the University of Washington by Australian professor Stan Gessel. They grew to about 60-70 feet high, and then froze in 1979. However, they were not from a provenance selected for cold-hardiness.

Specimen Ian gave me is fine...

It made it through last winter in a pot. But this is the kind of thing I am worried about with this species:

"They grew about 60-70 feet high, and then froze in 1979".

They are beautiful trees but they are huge. They could get a lot bigger than 70 feet before freezing to death during a bad winter. The winters that are hard on Euc's are when we have a severe winter after a particularly rainy Autumn.

Ian, what is the provinence of those E. delegatensis'es you got (and gave one to me)?

E. delegatensis provenance

Your plants and mine both were grown from Milligan seeds, and so should be a good cold-hardy provenance.

E. delegatensis - a very tall species!

Hi Barrie,
please keep in mind that this species can grow very tall ...

I grow them

Bruce gave me some seedling size specimens in 1996 and they are still growing and have never been damaged. I've also grown many from seed. I wish I would have planted my specimens in better soil so they would have grown to a larger size by now. Cheers, Joe

!

Christian, that is the smallest girl I've even seen! Can't be more than 14 or 15 inches tall...

The girl

Hi Steve,
the girl is about 1.6 m ( = 5.2 feet).

For me , this tree is by far the biggest eucalyptus I have ever seen. I was very lucky because the wind had broken some twigs containing a few capsules with seeds.
