Tetrapanax flowers???

Every morning I drive by a nice 15' single trunked Tetrapanax. This morning I noticed it has a few bloom spikes coming out the top of it. I wasn't aware that these flowered. Do they produce viable seed? If so I might stop and ask the owner if he plans on colecting them. Thanks

Are you sure...

that it is not a Fatsia. I would have thought all the tetrapanax would have been cut to the ground last winter.

Hardier than you think

Mine came through last winter unphased and unprotected except for a thick mulch of straw at the base. It was about 6 ft. tall. Leaf buds were undamaged by 20F or a bit under. It seems to have died from Verticillium (I suspect) during summer though. SAD.

I don't think a Fatsia would be 15 ft. with a single trunk. Must be T. 'Steroidal Giant' which is what I had.

I'm sure

Oh yeah, its a Tetrapanax. A very nice one too. The largest leaves are close to 3'. How fast do they grow? I got a root cutting last spring and it is now 2' tall. Should I expect it to grow to 6-8' next year? Thx
