Butia eriospatha

Some of my seedlings need to be transplanted. Any advise?
Some are already 3" high.
Only about 10% have germinated so far but the growth on the ones that have is fast.

Instructions

Wes, you have likely heard that you shouldn't transplant palm seedlings unil they have one decent sized leaf. I might wait until it is 4" high. If you wait until the days are longer they will recover better as well. You can put them in 4" pots (the taller the better) or if you have room to store them, 1 gal. Sterilise the pots with hot water. The soil I use is 1 third potting soil (high sand content), 1 third peatmoss, and 1 third perlite. I also put in some bone meal. If it is a 1 gal. pot, put some round stones (about 1 half inch across) in the bottom of the pot. If you set them in separate drip trays, I would raise the pots up so they don't sit in the water that flows through the bottom. I use three plastic milk jug lids (the kind that is on 4ltr) to sit the pot on. Water it thoroughly after planting, and only after that when the soil is quite dry (I use a meter to measure about 5" down).

Sit the pots in a bright area. Direct sun is fine, as long as the room isn't too hot (not likely a problem at this time of year).

I hope that helps. I have grown dozens of species and had some depressing losses because of mistakes. The above instructions should work most every time.
