Trachycarups germination

I've long been aware of the cooler temps that Trachycarpus fortunei germinates with. What I wasn't aware of was their ability to germinate during the cold of December. A number of seedlings have sprouted while being left out in a germination area, exposed to all that the elements can provide. I've seen them over winter and sprout in spring, but not under 35f - 45f conditions. They are tough palms alright !

Trachies

They are as tough as nails. Every year I scatter thousands of seeds throughout my gardens. you should see them even at this time. New seedlings poking up all of the time, even in these cooler months. I just sowed several new flats in the greenhouse last week. The larger specimens continue to open fronds throughout the winter as well. They llove this weather. At the moment there is a bit of snow on the fronds, and they look right at home in our west coast climate. Cheers, Joe
